Fein
Trust & Safety

Your location is personal. Here’s how Fein treats it.

Fein helps you stay close to your family, friends and colleagues. That only works if you can trust us with where you are. This page explains, in plain words, who can see your information, what we keep and for how long, and what you control.

Our promises

Four things you can count on.

You choose who sees you

Your location goes only to the people you share it with, and in an SOS to your family, friends and colleagues and your emergency contact. Pause, or stop sharing with any group, at any time.

We don’t sell your data

No selling, no renting, no data brokers. Fein shows no ads and has no advertising partners.

We don’t keep it forever

Your movement timeline clears itself after 30 days. Delete your account and we remove your data, apart from the few things listed below.

SOS reaches people you chose

An SOS alerts your family, friends and colleagues, and your emergency contact if none of them is on the way. Fein doesn’t call emergency services, so call them first.

Who can see what

Everyone who can see something about you.

And what each of them sees.

People you share your location with
Groups where your sharing is on
Where you are, your trips, and when you arrive at or leave your Places.
Everyone in a group with you
Even where your sharing is off
Your name and photo, your messages in the group’s chat, and your phone number if you added one. An SOS you send shows them where you are.
Your emergency contact
Only after an SOS
A text message with your name and last known location, if none of your family, friends or colleagues is on the way within 60 seconds.
Companies that help run Fein
Only what each job needs
For example, our map provider gets your searches and our text-message provider gets the SOS text. The full list is below.
Advertisers and data brokers
Never
We don’t sell, rent or trade your information, and Fein has no ads.
What pausing does. Pause stops your phone sending new locations, but people still see the last location Fein had for you. To hide from one group, turn off sharing for that group. Anyone who is also in another group with you, where you do share, can still see you there.
How long we keep things

Most location data expires on its own.

Everything else stays until you delete your account.

7 daysOur host’s backups of the database
30 daysYour movement timeline and the speed along each trip
90 daysPlace arrivals and departures, and driving events
1 yearReports about a message or a person
Your accountYour profile, groups, Places, trips and messages
When you delete your account, it happens at once. Messages you sent stay in their chats without your name attached, unless you deleted them for everyone first. Backups clear within 7 days. What stays, in full
Your controls

All of these are in the app.

None of them needs an email to us.

Pause sharing

Stops new location updates. Your last location stays visible.

Stop sharing with one group

That group stops seeing where you are, your trips and your arrivals. An SOS you send still shows them.

Export your data

Download a copy of your history from the app.

Delete a message for everyone

Within 24 hours of sending it. Messages in an SOS chat can’t be deleted.

Report or block

Report a message or a person. Block someone to hide their messages from you.

Delete your account

In Settings. It’s immediate, and we email you when it’s done.

How SOS works

What happens to your information when you ask for help.

Step 1

You send an SOS

Fein sends your live location with the alert.

Step 2

Your people are alerted

Everyone you share a group with gets the alert and can see where you are.

Step 3

Your emergency contact gets a text

If none of them is on the way within 60 seconds, we text your name and last known location.

Fein never contacts police, ambulance or fire services. In an emergency, dial your local emergency number first. The SOS screen can open your phone’s dialler for you.
How we protect it

Four measures, in place today.

No system is perfectly secure. If a data breach affects you, we’ll tell you, and the authorities where the law requires it.

  • Encrypted between your phone and our servers
  • Encrypted where it’s stored
  • Every request for your location is checked against your group memberships, in the database itself
  • Photos and data exports sit in private storage, opened only by short-lived links
